LabelThe downcast eyes, slightly tilted head, and elegantly raised hand imbue this representation of the Virgin Mary with grace, poise, and delicacy. Hans Memling produced many images of the Virgin and female saints over the course of his career, often intending them as devotional objects that focused and facilitated the prayers of faithful viewers. This small painting was once part of a much larger work. It may be a fragment from an Annunciation scene.* Works in the collection are moved off view for many different reasons. Although gallery locations on the website are updated regularly, there is no guarantee that this object will be on display on the day of your visit. |
